“Will You Be My Valentine?”

February 13, 2015

Valentine’s Day: a day set aside to show your affection for the ones you love with romantic letters or gestures, cards, candy, flowers, and gifts. This year, as in years past, you can rely on Lincoln clubs to help you make that day extra special.

Every day this week, members of Lincoln’s French Club held a Valentine’s booth at lunch by the art rooms. They sold handcrafted pillows, a message card, chocolate kisses and a gift box for $5. They also coordinated a ‘Valentine Candy Gram’ activity.

Some students’ thoughts about Valentine’s Day focus on being excited and in love. Others hate the day and think it’s pointless and just another day.

Lily Hawkins, sophomore, said, “Valentine’s Day sucks, even though I’m in a relationship.” And junior Allison Reich‘s main thought about the day is that “couples are annoying.”

Some students, like sophomore Carolina Evaristo, think Valentine’s Day is “just another day. Apparently it’s the only special day for love.”

Many associate this day with a baby in a diaper shooting arrows at people and making them instantly fall in love. This miracle baby is commonly known as Cupid and is the Roman God for the passionate type of love.

Valentine’s Day dates back to as early as 270 A.D. It is named after St. Valentine, a man who married people in secret after the king banned marriage to ensure his soldiers would be focused. St. Valentine was caught and thrown into jail, where he then fell in love with the jailer’s blind daughter. He was eventually beheaded, but his legacy lives on to this day.

Love quotes, which are very popular among Valentine’s Day cards, are used to show just how much someone’s ‘valentine’ means to them.

Valentine’s Quotes:

“Love will find a way through paths where wolves fear to prey.” -Lord Byron

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” -Charles Schulz

“It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” -Samuel Butter

“Each time you love, love as deep as if it were forever.” -Audre Lorde

Then there’s the most Famous line of all: “Will you be my Valentine?”
