Nosotras entrevistamos a la señorita Barragán y le preguntamos algunas preguntas relacionadas a su vida como una maestra bilingüe aquí en Lincoln. Le preguntamos de dónde es, cuál es su parte favorita de ser bilingüe, qué le inspiró a enseñar y qué le gusta hacer en su tiempo libre. Nosotras disfrutamos conocer una maestra tan interesante y le deseamos buena suerte este año escolar.

Aunque la Señorita Barragán nació aquí, sus padres son de México (Michoacán, Jalisco). Ella heredó la cultura de sus padres y eso tuvo un gran impacto en su vida. Ella hablaba sólo español como su primer lenguaje y sus padres no le permitían hablar el inglés en la casa. Por esto, ahora domina el español con fluidez y le parece más fácil encontrar un trabajo siendo una persona bilingüe. A la señorita Barragán también le gusta la comida de la cultura mexicana. Mantener su lenguaje le ha permitido vivir de la experiencia de su cultura, por ejemplo la comida.

El primer lenguaje de la señorita Barragán fue el español y aprendió hablar el inglés con fluidez hasta que tuvo los once años. Ella fue interesada en enseñar a Lincoln por todas las oportunidades de poder conectar con los estudiantes y sus padres.

Además, la señorita Barragán estudió en España por nueve meses y observó a su maestra, la cual estaba enseñando el español. La maestra no sabía ninguna palabra en inglés, mientras sus estudiantes no sabían ninguna palabra en español. Cuando la señorita Barragán le preguntó cómo ella pudo enseñar y comprender a sus estudiantes, la maestra le dijo que usaba movimientos físicos, imágenes, videos, lo que sea y todo lo que podía encontrar. La señora Barragán se sintió inspirada por su maestra apasionada y regresó a los Estados Unidos para obtener su título de Maestría y hacerse profesora.

Su parte favorita de ser bilingüe es que ella puede tener una conversación en cualquier lugar con cualquier persona que hable español. Aunque ella no conozca quienes son las personas, ella se siente conectada con ellos a través de su lenguaje y cultura.

En su tiempo libre, la señorita Barragán le gusta estar con sus amigos, familia, su novio y ver la televisión.

We interviewed Mrs Barragan and asked her a few questions relating to her life as a bilingual teacher here at Lincoln. We asked her where she’s from, what her favorite part of being bilingual is, what inspired her to teach and what she likes to do in her free time. We enjoyed getting to know such an interesting teacher and wish her well this school year.

Although Ms Barragan was born here, her parents are from Mexico (Michoacan, Jalisco). Their culture was passed down to her and had a great effect on her life. She spoke solely Spanish as a first language and was not allowed to speak English in the home. Because of that, she is now a fluent speaker and has an easier time finding a job as a bilingual person. She also enjoys the food of the mexican culture.

Ms Barragan’s first language was Spanish and she didn’t fully transfer to fluent English until she was eleven. She was interested in teaching at Lincoln because of all the opportunities to get connected to the students and parents.

Ms Barragan studied abroad in Spain for nine months and observed a teacher who was teaching Spanish. The teacher did not know a word of English while the students did not know any Spanish. Ms Barragan asked her how she could teach and understand her students, and she told her that she teached using body motions, pictures, videos, anything she could find. Ms Barragan was inspired by this passionate teacher and went back to the US to get her Masters and become a teacher.

Ms Barragan’s favorite part about being bilingual is the fact that she can pick up a conversation anywhere with someone who is speaking spanish. Even though she doesn’t know their name or who they are,  she feels connected to them through her language and culture.
