VIDEO: Jazz In The Box 2016
Lincoln’s fifth annual Jazz in the Box (JITB) was held on the nights of January 28, 29, and 30. This perfect intersection of art, dance, and music made for a fantastic show! This year, performances boasted a diverse set list inspired by the soulful songs of New Orleans. Throughout the night, Lincoln’s most talented jazz musicians kept energy levels high as they put on a phenomenal show for all.
In the true spirit of Mardi Gras, the Black Box theater was decked out in bright greens, yellows, and purples. Beads were also given out to audience members brave enough to make the trek onstage. In addition, this year’s show featured a funky dance floor, and gorgeous Mardi Gras decor.
During the first third of the show, Jazz Band Too played a number of tunes, including Vince Gassi’s “Big Band Theory” and Mike Story’s “Fiesta Del Tigre.” For the rest of the performance, Lincoln’s regular Jazz Band wowed with their renditions of hits like “Easy to Love” and “Defibrillator.”
When slower songs were played, couples young and old stepped onto the dance floor to share a special moment under the spotlight. Teachers, parents, and students alike also danced along to the tune of saxes, trumpets, and trombones. Love and laughter were in the air as Lincoln Lions united on the dance floor to groove to the sound of New Orleans jazz.
Along with live music, a gallery was set up in a smaller section of the theater. During intermission, guests were welcome to walk around and view fine artwork created by students in the art department. Jazz-inspired pieces ranging from as little as $30 to as much as $150 were available for purchase, and money earned from these sales was used to help fund various school activities.
Each night, the show differed slightly. Viewers who came on Thursday were treated to a special performance from guest A Touch of Brass. For students watching the Friday show, a special discount allowed them to see the performance for only $5, and closing night offered expanded seating. Before the Friday show, audience members also had the opportunity to go onstage to learn partner-dancing moves from two guest choreographers.
Overall, Jazz in the Box was a hit, playing to packed houses every night. With something for everyone to enjoy, the show couldn’t have been a better crowd-pleaser. This combination of quality art, dance, and music made for one of the best performances of the year.
