Boys Soccer: Lincoln’s First CCS Championship
On Tuesday March 8th, 2016 Lincoln’s boys varsity soccer team made history for our school by winning Lincoln’s first ever Central Coast Section (CCS) Championship. Our varsity boys played the final game against Alvarez High school at Leigh High School (the host school) at 7 p.m. to decide who took home the CCS Champion title. From the first whistle to the last both teams pushed through and fought hard offensively and defensively.
First Half
Lincoln has the ball for kickoff at the center circle to begin the game. It was raining before the game and a little bit into the first half which made the ball and the field situation extremely wet/slippery. With 24 minutes on the clock #17, Luis Andrade, from Alvarez scored the first goal of the game making the score 0-1, Alvarez. Another Alvarez player shot from the right side of the field and then after Lincoln’s goal keeper, Julian Lorenzo, blocked the shot #17 got the rebound and kicked it in before Julian could get back up. Lincoln is devastated but they know they couldn’t give up so soon, they kept attacking and kept their pressure high. Around the last 10 minutes of the game Lincoln is on the attack and #16, Juan Carrillo, takes a powerful shot which the Alvarez goal keeper deflects. The ball rolls slowly right in front of the goal and Lincoln’s #9, Ramon Inda-Felix, kicks it into the open net and makes the score 1-1. Lincoln celebrates that they are back in the game and sets up at the center circle to keep up their spirits for the remainder of the first half. Both teams kept at it for the rest of the half, an Alvarez player received one yellow and Lincoln misses a great scoring opportunity. The first half ends with the score of 1-1 with both teams on edge on who was going to take home the CCS title.
Second Half
Alvarez starts the second half with kickoff and both teams shoot out, ready to win this game right when the whistle blows. Not soon after the second half started Lincoln gets fouled and get a free kick only 30 yards from the goal. Lincoln’s #23, Henos Tsegay, gets ahead on the crossed ball and it barely goes over the goal. Alvarez gets the ball out of their side and make many more great attacking plays but they don’t put it in our net. Then with 31:26 on the clock Lincoln scores our second goal of the game. #16, Juan Carrillo, then he chips it into the top left corner of goal and makes the score 2-1 Lincoln. The lions were overjoyed after that goal, we knew that we just needed to hold Alvarez for the rest of the game to win it all. In the process of trying to protect our title we made a few fouls, #8 (Omar Setka) receives a yellow with 29:00 minutes left on the clock. Lincoln recovered from their mistakes and kept up on their strong attacks to match their strong defense. Alvarez saw the clock ticking down and so they became impatient and resorted to fouls and extremely aggressive playing. In the last 10 minutes Alvarez is on the attack and they pass most of our defense to take a shot and Lincoln’s goal keeper, Julian Lorenzo, makes an amazing save diving to the top right corner and keeping the score 2-1 Lincoln. With only a few minutes left in the game there was almost a fight when #21 from Alvarez pushed #9, Ramon Inda-Felix, from Lincoln and then Lincoln’s #21, Diego Beiza, stepped in and pushed Alvarez’s player back. The referee sent Lincoln’s #9 off the field because of a previous foul and both teams played on. It got extremely intense in the last 2 minutes of the game because Alvarez just needed to tie to go into overtime and maybe have a chance at the championship, but Lincoln held strong and won the game with the score of 2-1.
Lincoln’s First Central Coast Championship
The Lincoln boys soccer team made history that day because they won Lincoln’s first CCS Championship for a team sport.
After the boys won their CCS championship, Lincoln Lion Tales interviewed Brayan Guerrero and Abel Flores.
Brayan and Abel agreed that before the game they “were nervous and scared” but their “families” support really helped them throughout this great season prior to their final game. They seemed proud and in awe about winning the title of Division 1 CCS champions because they “made history and are legends” of Lincoln High School.
We then interviewed the head coach, coach Juan. Coach Juan seemed very proud, but kept his composure after their win — as he usually does. Coach Juan said, “I feel like it was more important to me, because I’m Lincoln Alumni and I’ve been through the CCS championships.” Coach Juan told Lion Tales all about our team and the type of people they are, explaining that they’re “funny but serious… they come from very different backgrounds and have different personalities.”
