Play On Words: Reading Series Features Local Writers and Actors

Play on Words is a local San Jose event that gives emerging and experienced writers a space to see their pieces in action and read by real actors.

The event was created by Melinda Marks, Nicole Hughes, and Julia Halprin Jackson. They all attended similar events in the San Francisco area and wondered why it wasn’t being done in San Jose. So they brought it to San Jose.

People can submit pieces of writing, about 2000 words in length, and the hosts go through all the submissions and choose 5-10 pieces to have performed. Last year over 30 submissions were submitted and 5 were chosen out of the 30.  Submissions are open to all ages, but are mostly focused on emerging and experienced writers. The event is held at the Blackbird Tavern, a new restaurant/bar in Downtown San Jose. Last year’s event held about 75 people who attended the event.

Past readings have been held once a year but the hosts are thinking of holding it once a semester, following San Jose State’s schedule. This year’s event will be held at the same venue on February 13th, 2014. Admission is free and open to all ages.
