Unos estudiantes de la clase de Traducción decidieron entrevistar a la Maestra Katemopolous y dos estudiantes que cantan en “Chamber Chorale.” Aquí están las preguntas y las respuestas originales y traducidas.

Interview with Ms. K:

Why did you choose a number from Hamilton for Men’s Choir to perform and what was the reason behind performing it for the entire faculty?

I love the musical Hamilton; Lin Manuel Miranda is one of my favorite composers. I think he is the new “it man” for musical theatre and that musical theatre is headed in the direction of synthesizing and fusing all different styles together into one. I wanted to do it for the faculty because I understand the staff is a very busy group of people. However, I also very keenly realize what these kids do outside of the classroom, and acknowledge that their teachers may or may not be aware of what the kids do when they’re not in their respective classrooms. It’s important to show that students have so many diverse interests.

What is the importance of music and choir in a student’s education?

It is well proven that students who are in the performing arts score better, are more active in school, stay out of trouble. A student who has the discipline of being in choir is going to have the discipline outside of the choral setting.

This was Lincoln’s first time doing a Pops Concert. How do you think it went?

Oh my gosh! It was great! (We’ll do it again.) Kids had fun, audience had fun (there were return visits) and I had fun.

Interview with Tahv Demayo:

How has choir shaped your educational career and what is the most important thing you’ve learned?

More than anything it’s an escape. When all of the crap is going on…I don’t want to say it’s the best excuse ever but it kind of is. It also gives you a circle of friends to do homework with, and provide a chance for you to have a reason to go to school. It’s very therapeutic in that way.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from choir

The lesson of really taking what’s in my head and and putting it out in

Rest and that rest and taking care of yourself is the most important thing and you know you want to push and if you want to go hard do it, like last year i was a base this year i’m a first tenor, so you can push but at the same time you drink a lot of water and stay rested and don’t go over the top, don’t hurt yourself.

This is the first time lincoln had a pop concert. How do you think it went?

I think it went really well, in addition to appealing to a wider audience the music was really fun and you know men’s choir especially got really jazzed up about it (pun intended). The idea of having colorful shirts and having fun.

What  is your favorite piece you’ve performed and why>

I would have to say last semester we performed hallelujah and i got to sing the solo in that so that was fun but i think also in addition I like making people cry in a good way and just helping them feel beyond what’s just on the page.

Interview with Mia Echivarre-Morelli

How has choir shaped your educational career and what is the most important thing you’ve learned?

It has helped not just in education but also to become a better person and I think Ms. K has taught me to always be true to myself. Even though it’s a choir class it’s also a lot more than that. It is also a really safe environment.

This was Lincoln’s first time doing a Pops Concert. How do you think it went?

I thought it was really fun! This was my first time being in a really big concert, too, and I thought it was a great experience. Everybody grew throughout the concert: at the beginning it was a little rough but as it went on it got better.

What has been your favorite piece to perform so far?

My favorite piece has been Witness because I like all the harmonies that we sing together.

¿Por qué eligió la serie de Hamilton para los hombres de coro y cuál fue la razón de presentarlo para toda la facultad?

Me encanta la música de Hamilton’s; Lin Manuel Miranda es uno de mis compositores favoritos. Creo que es el nuevo “it man” para el teatro musical y que el teatro musical va en la dirección de sintetizar y fusionar estilos diferentes en un solo estilo. Quería presentarlo a la facultad porque entiendo que todos los maestros son muy ocupados. Sin embargo, también se que no saben mucho de lo que hacen estos chicos fuera de la clase, y entiendo que sus profesores no siempre reconocen otras actividades que no pasan en sus respectivas aulas. Es importante mostrar que los estudiantes tienen intereses tan diversos.

¿Cuál es la importancia de la música y el coro en la educación de un estudiante?

Está bien demostrado que los estudiantes que toman clases de artes escénicas obtienen mejores notas, son más activos en la escuela, y se mantienen fuera de problemas. Un estudiante que tiene la disciplina de estar en el coro va a tener la disciplina fuera del entorno de coral.

Esta fue la primera vez que Lincoln ha hecho un concierto Pops. ¿Cómo cree que  fue?

Ay, Dios mío! ¡Fue grandioso! (Vamos a hacerlo de nuevo.) Los niños se divirtieron, la audiencia se divirtió (hubo visitas de retorno)  yo también me divertí.

Cual es tu parte favorito de coro?

Más que todo es un descanso; cuando hay cosas malas que te han pasado puedes huir y enfocarte en la música. También, te da un grupo de amigos con quienes puedes hacer tu tarea y cosas asi, y te proporciona una razón por cual vas a la escuela, es muy terapéutico en ese modo.

Cual es la lección más importante que has aprendido de coro?

La importancia del descanso y cuidando de ti mismo. Quieres desafiarte y si quieres poner todo lo que tienes en una canción hazlo, pero ala misma vez tienes que tomar mucha agua, descansar y no andar por las nubes para que no te lastimas.

Esta fue la primera vez que Lincoln tuvo un concierto de pop. ¿Cómo fue?

Creo que fue excelentemente, además de atraer a una audiencia más grande, la música fue muy divertida y el coro de hombres especialmente fueron “jazzed up” (juego de palabras entendido). La idea de poder vestirte con camisetas con colores divertidos y pasarlo bien lo hizo diferente de cualquier concierto en que he participado.

¿Cuál es tu canción favorita que has cantado y por qué?

Cuando cantamos “Aleluya” y yo pude cantar el solo eso fue muy divertido, pero también creo que me gusta hacer llorar a las personas en una manera simpática y ayudarles sentir emociones además de las instrucciones que están en la página.

¿Cómo ha formado el coro su carrera educativa y cuál es la cosa más importante que ha aprendido?

Me ha ayudado no sólo en la educación, sino también para convertirme en una persona mejor y creo que la Sra. K me ha enseñado a ser siempre fiel a mí misma. A pesar de que es una clase de coro también es mucho más que eso. También es un entorno realmente seguro.

Esta fue la primera vez que Lincoln hizo un concierto de música popular. ¿Cómo crees que te fue?

Yo creo que fue muy divertido. Esto fue mi primera vez participando en un concierto grande, fue una experiencia tremenda. Todos crecieron durante el concierto; en el principio, fue un poco duro, pero a medida que avanzaba, se puso un poco mejor.   

¿Cuál es su canción favorita que has cantado y por qué?

Mi canción favorita ha sido Testigo porque me gustan todas las armonías que cantamos juntos.
