“Music To Be Murdered By” Review

Eminem’s new album, Music To Be Murdered By (Gio Quezadas/ Lion Tales)

I originally planned on reviewing Blueface’s album, Find The Beat. However, I was unable to listen to it because it wasn’t on Spotify or Soundcloud. I looked all over the internet found that almost all the songs on the album were yet to be released. Instead, I’ll be reviewing Eminem’s album, Music To Be Murdered By

My personal favorite songs from the album are, You Gon’ Learn, Those Kinda Nights, Marsh and, Never Love Again. The beat and lyrics of the songs are perfectly balanced; resulting in well flowed tracks.

Eminem does a lot of play on words throughout these tracks. One that I had a laugh at was in Those Kinda Nights, “That’s the shortest thing for a dress, since an addy…” One of the two meanings this line has is; that the address for a house party is too short. Earlier in the verse, he mentions Ms. Ohio, making the line sound like the city of Cincinnati. There are other clever sexual play on words.

One of the songs that stood out most to me was Darkness. I found it interesting because the lyrics have a double meaning. While listening to it, the lyrics lead to the belief that Eminem is talking about what was going on in the shooters head prior to opening fire. But the deeper meaning, according to Genius, was Eminem’s past struggle with substance abuse and his violent persona, Slim Shady. The music video portrays most of the events that took place on the shooters part. In the hotel, with alcohol, drugs, and weapons. At the end of the song, you can hear news broadcasts covering the different shootings that took place in previous years. One of the shootings mentioned is the Garlic Festival in Gilroy that took place in July, 2019. “This, a deadly shooting at a food festival in Northern California. Three people so far dead…”

Juice Wrld fans that listened to the album were happy to hear the late rappers talented voice on the chorus of Godzilla. Godzilla is currently #3 on the U.S. Top 50 on Spotify, and #1 on Genius’s top charts.

Almost a week after the album’s release, Eminem posted a letter onto his Instagram account regarding the criticism his album was receiving. In the letter he clarified that his album wasn’t made for everyone. Especially “… not made for the squeamish.” He also mentions how the lyrics are meant for “… the sharpest knives in the drawer.” He most likely refers to people who truly understand the world of rap, drugs, and his own life.

The rest of the songs on the album mostly relate to his past struggle with drugs, his childhood, and his early rap career. Music To Be Murdered By is worth listening to at least once. For those who have been Eminem fans since he started linking up with Dr. Dre, there will be a lot of references that you might be happy to hear.
