Movie Review: Divergent
To be completely honest, movies based on books are almost never as good as the book. Especially when it is competing with the award winning “Hunger Games.”
Nevertheless, “Divergent” fans all over the world are going to walk away satisfied.
Based on Veronica Roth’s first book from her best selling trilogy, Divergent stars Shailene Woodley as the main character, Tris. Some of the more well known cast includes her love interest played by Theo James, Kate Winslet as the main villain, and Ansel Elgort as her brother Caleb (Elgort will be playing Woodley’s love interest in “The Fault In Our Stars” this summer). Since “Divergent” is an action-adventure film, there isn’t much humor to be expected, but the character Peter blurted out tons of funny lines. It was a hundred times better that Peter was being played by actor, Miles Teller, since Teller has a comedic background.
The entire cast portrayed the book wonderfully, but like in any film based on a novel, changes were made. Some drastic changes include the exclusion of a couple of Tris’ fears in her fear landscape, many of the smaller characters from the first book were left out (even when some play an important role in the second book!), and the violence was trimmed down a decent amount. No one falls to their death from a train or loses an eye like in the book.
A huge win for “Divergent” was Tris’ mother’s death scene. Woodley’s acting was superb; she definitely illustrated a true rendition of what it would be like for a 16 year old to see their mother shot to death. I, for one, can say the entire theater was a storm of sniffles, sobs, and gasps. The grief in this scene felt so real. It was hands down one of, if not the best scene in the movie.
“Divergent’s” success was shown at the box office last weekend, earning an estimated $56 million. Nevertheless, some people might consider $56 million a flop in comparison to the $152.5 million the “Hunger Games” earned. Though it’s not enough of a flop for Lions Gate Entertainment to turn down the second installment in the trilogy, “Insurgent.” “Insurgent” was already given the green light and is said to be released March 2015.
