Book Review : “It’s Kind of a Funny Story”

Book Review : "It's Kind of a Funny Story"
Ned Vizzini committed suicide exactly one year ago on December 19, 2013 at the age of 32. To commemorate his successful literary work I decided to read one of his most celebrated novels “It’s Kind of a Funny Story”.

“It’s Kind of a Funny Story” is a story about depression, suicide, and the pressures of life. That being said I want to advise readers that the book is very dark. The first line in the book alone makes an impact strong enough to either make you want to keep reading or scare you away. It may seem like a load of heavy topics for a Young Adult book but Vizzini constantly keeps situations enlightened with a sense of humor.

The book’s main character is a New York City teenager named Craig Gilner who with the pressures of his new elite high school nearly kills himself. The suicide attempt lands him in a mental hospital where he meets an array of people that become part of his journey towards recovery.

“It’s Kind of a Funny Story” is based on Ned Vizzini’s personal experience in a psychiatric hospital. At the age of twenty three Vizzini was admitted into a psychiatric hospital in Brooklyn for five days after calling a suicide hotline.

This is an important book that can help many teenagers and even adults realize that it is perfectly acceptable to receive help.

Four years after the release of the book, “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” was adapted into a movie. The film had a majority of positive reviews and a well known cast to go along with it. Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, Zoe Kravitz, and Keir Gilchrist were just some of the cast that created an overall accurate representation of the book.
