On Your Mark, Get Set, Go: Track and Field Starts New Season
“The beautiful thing about track is that there is a team concept but it is very individual, so what I would expect from our athletes is that each one of them would be able to get their personal best,” said coach Kevin Collins.
The track and field team has already begun their season. Recently a few athletes were invited to the K-Bell Track and Field Classic on March 14.
In the Varsity girls division, senior Karina Brouse placed sixth in the 100 meter hurdles and sixth in the 300 meter hurdles. In the Frosh/Soph boys division, sophomore Jing Jing Huntley placed fifth in long jump, third in high jump, and first in triple jump. In the Varsity boys division, Jose Pina placed first in the 3200 meter run.
The first meet that the Lions had was on March 7 at the Willow Glen Invitational, and another meet followed on March 12 at Overfelt High School. Their next meet will be at Branham High School on March 19 at 3:30 pm.
When asked about last season, Coach Collins said, “We did really well. Both boys and girls were in the middle or the top of their league as a team. We had several seniors who did really well. Daniel Cervantes ran in the state meet, Jacob Hoekstra and Jose Pina ran in the CCS Finals, and Karina Brouse did a nice job with hurdles and jumps. We had a really good team that went far in CCS. Team wise, we were great, and individually we did as well as we have ever done in CCS.”
A new season comes with new team members. Sophomore Adrian Frometa said, “I wasn’t really expecting [too] much going in, it went smoothly and was very welcomed by the returning runners. I made a transition from last year playing volleyball and now running track. I just hope this year goes really well.”
