Lions Baseball Hosts CCS For First Time in 40 Years

Lincoln’s Varsity baseball team went 18-8 in its 2015 overall season, which propelled the team to the first round of the CCS (Central Coast Section) tournament for the second year in a row. However, the Lions lost their game against Sequoia High School by a score of 2-1 in extra innings on Wednesday afternoon.

Lincoln baseball had some great accomplishments this season. The team came out on top of the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Santa Teresa Division, commonly known as the “B” League. This year, the team had just moved up to the second-highest B League, a big change from its spot in the West Valley Division, or “C” League, during the previous 2014 season.

It was Lincoln’s “first home playoff game in forty years,” Mr. Collins stated in an email to staff.

The game was tied at 0-0 in the first inning, then it came to the second inning and the scoring commenced. Sequoia made two hits and scored one run. When Lincoln came up to bat, Kyle Ochoa hit a bomb to right center and had a leadoff double. Robert Zamora then stepped up to the plate, hitting a bomb to center field and making it to second base. Zamora’s hit brought Ochoa in, tying the score up at 1-1 in the second inning.

They were tied until it came to the eighth inning in extra innings. Sequoia had runners on 3rd and 1st. The batter hit the ball to right field. It was up to Lincoln’s Jacob Ybarra to make the catch and save the Lions from losing the game. He ran to the ball and tried to make a diving catch but missed the ball, allowing Sequoia to score.

The score was 2-1 and the Lions were at the top of the lineup so it was up to them to make some plays and try to win the game. They got a first out on a line drive to third base, second out was a pop up, and the third out was a pop up also. Sequoia ended up winning the game 2-1, sending them to the quarterfinals to face Monta Vista.

Congratulations to the Varsity baseball team for winning their league. We look forward to their next season as they move up to the “A” League, the Mt. Hamilton Division.
