Olmos’ CCS Champs, Again: State Champ Next?
On Saturday, February 4 2017, Haven Olmos cemented herself as a Lincoln High School legend when she won her third consecutive CCS Championship, a feat that has never been accomplished by any athlete from Lincoln High School.
When Haven and her opponent, Stephanie Ruelas, stepped onto the mat at Oak Grove High School, the only light in the gym was the one hanging above them. The stands were filled with spectators awaiting Haven’s bout. Haven and her opponent stepped onto the mat, and as both got ready, the ref came over, blew his whistle, and the bout began.
Usually Haven’s matches go pretty quickly. One of her matches was even decided within 19 seconds. This bout, however, was different ; from the very beginning Haven had a more patient approach, contrary to her more aggressive style. By late in the second round it became clear who the winner would be. The clock hit zero, and Haven won her third CCS title.
Haven’s season doesn’t end there. In her own words, Haven’s true goal is “to be a state champ.”
Haven wasn’t the only Lincoln wrestler to win a CCS title that Saturday. Mia Olmos, Haven’s younger sister, won her first CCS title as well. Mia’s bout went into the third round, and she won due to the mercy rule, which states that once a wrestler is ahead by 16 points, the wrestler wins the bout.
