Lincoln’s Mixed Doubles Wins Badminton League Finals, Advances to CCS Tournament
For the first time in Lincoln’s history, a mixed doubles pair won league to advance to the CCS tournament.
Congratulations to Andrew Nguyen and Vivian Le, Lincoln’s #1 mixed doubles pair, who won the mixed doubles West Valley league championship on Thursday May 22nd at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill.
They are on their way to the CCS badminton tournament on May 30th and 31st at Independence High School. They played very well, beating Gunderson’s #1 mixed doubles pair for the final match of the West Valley League championship in two sets, 21-17 and 21-17, winning their bracket in convincing fashion.
Coming into the league tournament, Andrew Nguyen and Vivian Le were the top seed due to their outstanding play during regular season. They finished the season with a 14-2 record. They played 4 matches over the 2 day tournament, never losing any sets. In the first match they played against San Jose High Bulldogs, the Bulldogs fell behind early and couldn’t come back. In the second match they played, the Gunderson Grizzlies #2 mixed pair had a good match against them, but Andrew and Vivian sent them to the losers bracket as they advanced further in the double-elimination, round-robin tournament. The third match pitted them against the Gunderson #1 pair, who they beat 21-19 in the first set and 21-12 in the second set.
Since the bracket was a double elimination bracket, they faced the Gunderson #1 pair again in the final. After a tense second set where they fell behind early, they won after spotting their opponent 3 points in the beginning of the second set. They won the match after Gunderson hit the last two points out of bounds. After the last point, all players came to the center of the court and shook hands over the net. This is the first time in Lincoln history that a badminton mixed doubles pair has won league and represented Lincoln at CCS.
Congratulations Andrew and Vivian from all of us at Lion Tales for a job well done!
