The world of women’s flag football has been on the rise lately, with more and more girls taking up the sport. With a growing number of high schools offering it to young female athletes, and even some colleges starting or in the process of bringing women’s flag football to D1 schools. This is an incredible opportunity for many young athletes who want to play in college and for those who want a chance at a scholarship, opening more doors.
With all this happening with women’s flag football and the growing number of people participating in it, it has caught the attention of the Olympics. The 2028 summer games, taking place in Los Angeles, California are going to host a new sport, flag football, which is great news for those who play and want to play at a higher and more serious level. Flag football is played by over 20 million people, not just women, and in more than 100 countries. It is a very high-level and competitive sport, so it makes sense that it is getting brought to the Olympic level.
The Olympic committee announced this news in October 2023, officially saying that flag football will be introduced in the LA28 Olympics. Showcasing pathways for elite flag football players to make their mark on the game, going down in history as being the first year where they offer flag football as an actual sport being held at the Olympic games.
In 2022, World Games Flag Football made its first day as an internationally played sport, with roughly 3,500 athletes from about 100 different countries. And now being able to participate in the Olympics and represent your country is such a great opportunity for athletics.
Having women’s flag football in the Olympics would help increase participation in the sport and will help get the word out there that women’s flag football is a real thing and not just some game people play for fun. Displaying this new game in the actual olympics would definitely increase participation and the want to play the game, hopefully encouraging students here at Lincoln High School to join our own Flag Football team.
Kids have so many opportunities now days to play the wonderful game of flag football with having club teams, a high school teams (including Lincoln), adult league teams, little leagues, or even a college teams offering it to girls and women to play.
