Luna Park Chalk Art Festival
On September 21st, the sixth annual Luna Park Chalk Art Festival happened. Artist can pay, depending on the size of the sidewalk they want, and draw a piece of their artwork. Many local artists participate in the festival.
Lincoln High school’s National Art Honors Society (NAHS) also participate in the festival. “It’s always NAHS’s first event of the year” said NAHS’s historian Esther Dellobueno. This year they had 2 spaces. On one space they did a reinterpretation of Van Gogh’s painting Sunflowers, and the second space was going to be a free handed piece which everyone from NAHS would draw a random drawing in one space. “We researched Van Gogh and decided to do a reinterpretation of his work” said Esther. The whole piece took them around 3 to 4 hours. “This year was faster” Esther said,” because we had more people helped, so by the first 3 hours of the festival it was almost complete!”
During the festival the weather was not helpful however. The sky turned grey and eventually started to rain. Many artist’s work washed away. Lacy Bryant, a local San Jose artist who has many paintings in galleries around San Jose was working on a bigger piece and the rain washed it away. “It’s all good” she said,” it really wasn’t going to last anyways!” During the storm she wrote “c’est la vie!” Which means “that’s life!” in French.
Even after the rain some artist had canopies set up before the rain came. Unfortunately not all artist had canopies up but, NAHS was one of the few groups who had their art worked saved from the rain due to there canopy. Despite the rain washing everything away, it was still a good time at the sixth annual Luna Park Chalk Art Festival.
