Xotchitl Cultural Performs for Cinco de Mayo
Xochitl Cultural, beginning, and intermediate folklorico held a Cinco de Mayo performance in Lincoln’s theater on May 1, May 2, and a free performance for selected classes on May 5. Lion Tales attended the performance on Friday night, May 1st.
Although the show was said to begin at 7:30 in the evening, it began almost 20 minutes after.
The set was decorated with colorful paper flowers and an art gallery was featured outside the theater. Outside the theater, Mexican food, like Tamales and Pan Dulce, were being sold.
The crowd was very lively throughout the night and expressed a strong sense of enthusiasm and enjoyment for the show.
There was a short, 15 minute intermission. After the intermission, two performers called for volunteers to demonstrate their “grito.” The “grito” is a shout of victory, or for battle, famous throughout Mexico.
Erick Navarrete, a Xochitl Cultural member, commented on his experience performing in the Cinco de Mayo show. He said, “I was kind of terrified, but it is nothing out of the ordinary now.”
The dancers executed their performances with much grace to the point where it seemed effortless. Make sure to attend next year’s show!
