VIDEO: Xochitl Honors 2015 Mexican Independence Day
Did you guys check out the Xochitl Dancers´ first performance in the quad during lunch, on September 16, 2015? Well, if you didn’t, you missed out on a wonderful performance. The Xochitl dancers celebrated Mexican Independence day by demonstrating the traditional Folkórico dance. They danced to the songs Negra, and Jaliciense. Many people all over the world celebrate this day by having parades, festivals, feasts, parties, and more.
While watching the Xochitl dancers, their passion is shown through their powerful facial expressions. Throughout the dance, performers make eye contact with their partner the whole time. This is a crucial part of Folkórico dance, as it symbolizes the bond between dance partners, and is one of the most important components in Folkórico dancing. Xochitl dancers demonstrated a combination of elaborate skirt work and group dancing in their routines. While dancing Folkórico, the skirt is one of the most difficult movements to master, due to the amount of skill required in maneuvering the skirt while still staying in rhythm with the music.
The first performance captivated many spectators. With upbeat dances and exquisite costumes, their performance attracted a crowd of about 200 students and teachers. Many of the students were dancing to the music and enjoying themselves, which is an example of the strong and beautiful effect of Folkórico dance on people.
