Recap: Game 3 San Jose Sharks vs St. Louis Blues

It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

After a rough start for game 3, the Sharks exploded after the the 5 minute mark of the 1st period when Tomáš Hertl scored a rocket of a slap shot past Blues goalie Brian Elliot.

Halfway through the 2nd period, Joonas Donskoi back checked to his goal breaking an odd man rush from the Blues and leading the transition to a 2 on 1 break away for the Sharks. Logan Couture, leading the rush, held on to the puck just enough for Donskoi to join the rush and dish it on a platter for Donskoi to shoot it past Elliot giving the Sharks a 2-0 lead.

With 14 minutes left in the 3rd Period, Joe Thornton seamed the puck past a Blues defenseman to Hertl behind the net who comes around the net and sneaks it past Elliot’s five-hole which gives him his 2nd goal of the game and a 3-0 win for the Sharks. John Buccigross would appreciate the thin mints Hertl possessed on that goal.

The goals weren’t the only thing that helped the Sharks take game 3 though. Martin Jones tied the Sharks franchise record for shutouts in a postseason and was a brick wall last night and should deserve a lot of the credit for the win due to his poise and calmness he gives to his teammates whenever they are struggling in the defensive zone. Also, the depth players on the 3rd and 4th lines deserve credit as well by relieving pressure off of the top 2 lines with their work ethic and energy they distribute to the team. You also can’t forget about the Sharks defenseman who blocked 14 out of the 26 shots the Blues attempted. If the Sharks want to advance to the Stanley Cup Final, they must replicate game 3 into games 4 and 5. We haven’t won anything yet, but I like the Sharks chances of doing something special they’ve never done before.

Tune into Game 4 Saturday at 4:15 on NBC.
