2014 – 2015 Xochitl Cultural Dance Preview
Three members of Xochitl Cultural, Lincoln’s advanced Folklorico dance group, spoke to Lincoln Lion Tales about what they have planned for this year’s performances.
Genesis Ibañez, one of Lincoln’s new dance teachers, mentioned some of the performances that will be going on during the year. “Xochitl will be having two Christmas performances, Flair performance, two Cinco De Mayo, Day of the Dead, and any extra performances,” she said.
Ibañez brought up how Xochitl Cultural was invited to perform at the Mexican Heritage Plaza on September 14th for Mexican Independence Day. She also mentioned that only 2 of the Xochitl dancers are returning from last year, while 16 dancers are new to the group.
Miriam Suarez, a senior, is beginning her second year with Xochitl Cultural. She commented, “Everyone on the team is different from last year and we are learning new regions.” Miriam has been dancing Folkorico since she was in elementary school, and brought up that to dance Folkorico was difficult at first, but after a while it got much easier because the steps repeat themselves.
Lydia Ruiz, a junior, was also interviewed by Lion Tales. This is Lydia’s first year in Xochitl, and for her it’s all about concentration. She mentioned that dancing Folkorico is a fun experience and she recommends taking the class.
You can catch Xochitl Cultural’s first performance at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in Downtown San Jose on September 14th from 7:30 pm – 8:00 pm.
