Op/Ed: Disneyland Or California Adventure During Fall Break?
Hi, Lincoln Lions. Today’s subject is Disneyland and California Adventure. As an European, I didn’t know that Disneyland in California was divided in two parks and before I went, I didn’t know the differences between the two. Let’s learn a little bit more about that!
Disneyland and California Adventure, not the same?
Before giving you the advantages and disadvantages of both parks, we have to know why they are different.
First, the size. Disneyland is 13 Acres bigger than California Adventure. Second, the attendance: 18 million visitors for Disneyland and only 9 million for California Adventure. Third, the themes. Disneyland has nine themed lands: Main Street USA, Tomorrowland, Mickey’s Toontown, Frontierland, Critter Country, New Orleans Square, Adventureland, Fantasyland and the new one, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
California holds seven themed lands: Buena Vista Street, Grizzly Peak, Paradise Pier, Hollywoodland, Car’s Land, Pacific Wharf, and ‘A Bug’s Land’. Four, the rides. Disneyland favorites rides are Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, Matterhorn Bobsleds, The Haunted Mansion,

Dumbo, and the iconic ‘Small World’ attraction. California Adventure gets his favorites too: Mickey’s Fun Wheel, Soarin’ Over California, Radiator Springs Racers, Toy Story Midway Mania, and the only inverted coaster in the area, California Screamin’.
Five, the night show. Both of the parks get their night show, the famous ‘Fantasmic! Fireworks’ for Disneyland and ‘World of Color’ for California Adventure.
Six, alcohol is allowed in California Adventure, but not in Disneyland.
Seven, the history of the parks is obviously different. Disneyland was opened on July 16, 1955. Disneyland California opened in 2001.
What are the changes during Fall Break?
Fall break is close to Halloween, that’s why a few changes appears in both parks. You could find Halloween’s photo backgrounds where photographers will pick wonderful pictures of you. Your favorites characters will dress in their Halloween Costumes. You will also find special Halloween foods.
Additional Halloween shows will be available, Tinkerbell will not fly during Halloween Time, she will be replace by the dog from ‘Nightmare before Christmas’. Also, the ‘Haunted Mansion’ is themed by ‘Nightmare before Christmas.’
My Opinion
In my opinion, both of the parks have to be visited. However, if you can visit only one, the way to choose is simple. Are you a slow ride, but well decorated, or big roller coaster with simple decorations? If your preference is for the slow ride, Disneyland is done for you. If you like adrenaline, California Adventure should enjoy you the most. Except of the rides, I would say that Disneyland is more focused on the classic movies (Dumbo, Indiana Jones, Peter Pan) when California Adventure is more modern with the ‘Hollywood Land’ for example. Personally, I have visited Disneyland in Paris and thought the differences between Paris and California will be huge. It was not. I was not sad just surprised. Hopefully even if it was the same, the magic of Disney was still present.
