Lincoln’s Artists: A Drop in the Bucket

Downtown San Jose, by Esther Dello Bueno

Lincoln High is a visual and performing arts school, and I think it’s safe to say that our performing arts gets a little more attention than our visual arts. Lincoln has quite a few talented artists and Lion Tales is profiling three of them to inform you about their talents and what they plan to do with them in the future.

The first artist I am profiling is Esther Dello Bueno. Esther is a Senior at Lincoln who has been drawing as long as she can remember.  I asked Esther what she typically likes to draw/paint and she said, “I do a lot of abstract, I find my style is very broken up things, shattered glass and what not. I’m not at all a realistic art style artist.”

Lion Tales also asked Esther what it is she does with all her art work.  She said she mostly creates art for fun, shares the art with her friends online, or gives pieces away as gifts to her friends. Lately, however, she has been saving all her work for school because she is taking AP Art.  She is saving pieces to put in her portfolio. Since Esther is such a talented artist, I wanted to know how long she had been taking art classes, she said, “I started taking art classes in the sixth grade, so I’ve pretty much been taking art classes for the last seven years.”

Her experience in her art classes really shows in her work. When asked what she would like to do with her talent she said, “Whatever I do in the future is going to have to do with art, teaching art, or if I go into animation, or graphic design, I’m still figuring out exactly where I’m going to go, but it’s definitely going to be in some kind of art field.” Esther is on her way, the piece she is photographed with just won the Congressional Art Competition.  The piece will represent our district and will be hung in the Capitol for one year beside other student pieces from different districts all across the country. The prize also included two tickets to Washington D.C. for the ceremony. We asked Esther’s art teacher, Mrs. Zamora how she felt about Esther’s achievements and she said, “I am over the top proud of her. It’s a beautiful piece and as an aspiring artist she did an amazing job.”

The next artists Lion Tales interviewed was Senior Ivan Perez. Ivan says he has been drawing since he was in the second grade. When asked what his preferable art style is he told Lion Tales, “[He] likes to draw cartoons, things that are either funny, creative, mystical, or magical.” When I asked him why he likes to draw he said it’s a great way to express yourself and get your message out there for the world to see.

I also asked him what he does with all his drawings and he told me, “I either make them into something , like a t-shirt, sell them, or just keep them for myself.” Ivan has only taken two art classes: Beginning Art his Freshman year at Lincoln, and now AP Art.

When asked what Ivan wanted to do with his talent in the future he said, “I hope to make a brand, a big company in the future that ranges from comics, video games, TV shows, and so on.” The possibilities are endless, and he already seems to have a head start on that dream.  He has his own website called www.cartoontagging.com that promotes his drawings and t-shirt designs.

The last artist Lion Tales interviewed was Anthony Ramirez. Anthony has been drawing since he was in the third grade and typically has a cartoonish art style that usually always has to do with Adventure Time, Pokemon, or video games. When asked why he likes to draw he said, “I feel like it’s a great way to express myself and just create my own things.”

Anthony said he can’t go a day without drawing because if he doesn’t he doesn’t feel like himself.  Lion Tales asked him what he does with all that art work.  “Most of my drawings I usually just stick in a binder and keep in my closet,” he said. Anthony also told me that he has taken two art classes, Beginning Art his Freshman year, at San Jose High, and he is currently in Advanced Placement Art as a Senior.

Lion Tales wanted to know what Anthony planned on doing with his art skills in the near future and he informed me that he wants to major in animation and make cartoons, he wants to have his own comic with his characters, and, hopefully, expand his talent to video games.

These three artists are just a drop in the bucket of the many talented artists we have hear at Lincoln, you will definitely be seeing much more of them in the future.
