Good Karma Bikes will be moving on November 1st, 2015. (Salvador Cohenete / Lincoln Lion Tales)

Good Karma Bikes is a great non profit organization that transforms lives. Bicycles are a way  that helps transforms lives. They are located at 345 Sunol St. San Jose CA 95126. But on October 1st they are going to move to their new location just around the corner off of Lincoln and Auzerais. If you would like to help pack and sort items for the move, then volunteer on the weekends and on Wednesday. Barry Swenson Builder the donater of the building is going to demolish down the building. In place of that warehouse they will be building more condos. On the bright side Berry Swenson has offered many more building locations that GKB (Good Karma Bikes) could move to. Some where far away or just way too small. The new building that GKB will be moving into is a little small but just right. As the Cherry Oak furniture store went out of business Berry started on refurbishing the building so that by November first GKB could move in.

Good Karma has 6 wonderful programs:

1-Transitional Age Youth to College(TAY)

Usually kids from foster homes but also between the ages of 18-26 can sign up for this program. For the people who enter in this program will have to work at the shop for 6 months. After those 6 months they will be financially helped through community college. Once a week they come back and mentor the next group of people who are in the program.

2-Transportation for Transformation(T4T)

All the money that is made on the sales floor or on the internet is used to employ people in recovery and re-entry.

3-Free Repair Clinic

Every Saturday at GKB you can line up at the door with your bike and Craig (Manager) will ask what needs to be done on the bike.He takes in the bike and puts a tag on it and what needs to be done. A mechanic will get the bike and fix or replace the part on the bike. They try to get all the bikes done the same day and get people out onto the streets as fast as possible.

4-Work-For-Bike

Do you need a bike? GKB will let you work six hours for a bike. You can’t do them all at once. You have to spread the hours along the week. But at the end you can have yourself a bike.

5-Good Karma Kids

This program is great for kid to enjoy learning how to fix their bike. Also learn the importance of helping the community and maybe even create a bike drive for those in need.

6-Voucher bike

GKB partners with a number of local agencies who sponsor bikes and bike packages, including lights, locks, and helmets, to those in need. If you are an agency with clients in need, contact Gkb @408-291-0501

It all started in 2009 when Jim was at St. James Park and he was fixing his bike. A couple of homeless people came over to him and asked if he can help them fix their bike. Not only did he fix their bike but he also showed them how to fix it. After that Jim went to the same park every weekend with his toolbox to help fix peoples bikes. He got the word out and friends and family came with him to help fix the bikes. After a while he got a van to put all his tools in it and also started to get spare parts and put them in there too. In 2012 he had gotten enough sponsors to move into their current location. At Good Karma Bikes they have 15 sponsored work stations Sponsored by different companies, over 150 bikes to sell, and in their first day in the new building they are going to have over 100 bike items donated.
