“Art Boxes” Bring Color to San Jose Streets

Drab gray utility boxes are a necessity for any city. In San Jose, however, they have been transformed into a forum for artistic expression, an inspiration to all those who glimpse them while they’re just passing by.

The Art Box Project first began in September 2011, and since then, over 60 uniquely painted utility boxes have come to grace sidewalks and street corners all throughout San Jose. According to its founder Tina Morrill, the initiative aims to “Integrate art into SJ neighborhoods. Capture the unique voices of our communities. Surprise the passer-by with a spot of whimsy where they least expect it.”

Lion Tales went on a “photo journey” to the eight art boxes closest to Lincoln, all within walking distance. With the growing momentum of the project, soon enough, anywhere you go in this city you will be met with art.
